Empowering Young Women

05 Feb 2024

It's time to buckle up, as 2024 is poised and ready to be the year of Artificial Intelligence, with its transformative impact already felt worldwide. As we prepare for this exciting era of innovation, it's become apparent that proficiency in STEAM skills - science, technology, engineering, art and math - is vital for keeping up. These fields hold the key to solving global challenges at lightning speed. Nevertheless, there's a significant challenge to address: these fields continue to be male-dominated and women remain underrepresented, and it's high time to change this dynamic.

Every 11th of February is celebrated as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science to highlight the crucial role women can play in the STEM field. Despite the progress made, statistics worldwide show that women are still underrepresented in STEM roles and leadership positions globally.

However, we believe the STEM field could benefit from a more diverse, equal and full representation of voices and perspectives. By breaking down barriers, like conscious or unconscious gender bias, and fostering a more inclusive environment, we can create opportunities for talented girls and women to contribute to the field. Collaboration between governments, institutions, and business organizations is essential in achieving this goal to create a more welcoming, diverse and inclusive STEM community for all.

In the quest to inspire girls and women to conquer the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, early exposure is the key. By integrating STEM into the curriculum, and creating clear criteria for success in the classroom, we can spark new interest for these subjects and encourage girls into all areas of the STEM field.

However, this journey will require more than just words. Creating a more inclusive environment for women in male-dominated industries necessitates the provision of tools and resources. Scholarships, internships, and mentorship programs can be incredibly beneficial in this regard. These opportunities provide guidance and light the way forward for women to succeed in their chosen field.

It is now more important than ever to focus on gender equality in STEM fields. As a society, we have a shared responsibility to create an environment where women can bring in fresh perspectives, talent, creativity and excel in these careers. By doing so, we pave the way for a brighter future in which women drive innovation and contribute to a more diverse workforce in science and technology communities.
